Gioko is the Head of the Professional Development Center, Aga Khan Schools, Academy, Mombasa (A Microsoft Showcase School). He leads outreach professional learning sessionsat the center which includes The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (KIX)-IDRC Supported Learning Toolkit and Global Affairs Canada Foundation for Learning projects. Dr. Maina is the Global Coordinator of the Knowledge Exchange Programme across three countries Bangladesh, Rwanda, and Kenya. He is part of the Academic committee which facilitates Continuous Professional Learning Sessions fro the Academy Staff. In the leadership of continuous professional learning, Dr. Maina focuses on Science Education, Education Leadership and Management, Lead facilitation, Core Skills, Competency-BasedEducation, Learning and assessment, Transfer of Educators' Preparation into Practice, Education for Sustainable Development, Project Proposal Writing, and Reporting. Previously Dr. Maina worked on facilitating Microprocessor Systems, Information Technology, Computing Studies, Mathematics, and Physics, Dr. Maina is an Examiner, Online facilitator, Master Trainers, Lead Facilitator, Policy Engager, Researcher, Author, and Teacher Educator.
He holds a Doctor of Management from SMC University, Switzerland, a Master in Education, Certificate in Science Education, and Certificate in ICT Education all from Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan, a Bachelor of Science (Physics and Mathematics) from Egerton University, Kenya, Diploma in Teacher Education and Certificates in Graphics Design and Media Studies all from Mombasa Polytechnic, Kenya, Certificate of Social Development from Philanthropic University, Virtual and Certificate in EducationLeadership in Change from Harvard Graduate school of Education.
Dr. Maina has attended Internships, Fellowships, Workshops, Seminars, and Conferences in Asia, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, Eastern, Southern and Western Africa, and the USA which forms the building blocks in his area of specialization.
Dr. Maina has delivered the Kenya National Examination Council (Ordinary and Higher Diploma), Kenya Certificate Secondary Education (KCSE), General Certificate Education (GCE), International General Certificate Secondary Education(IGCSE), and International Baccalaureate (IB) (Middle Years and Diploma program) curriculums.
Dr. Maina has facilitated workshops and courses in his area of specialization in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Ghana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia, and the USA. In his facilitation, he has interacted with institutions such as the University of Humanities, Perm, Russia, Aga Khan University-Institute of Education (Pakistan, Tanzania, and UK), Aga Khan Education Services, Aga Khan Academies, Ministry of Education (Zimbabwe, South Africa, Ghana, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya), Kenya Ministry of Education Sage (KNEC, KEMI, TSC, KISE, KICD), Harvard Graduate School of Education, Concordia University and UoM, Malaysia.
Dr. Maina has participated in Policy engagement in Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, South Africa, and Pakistan.
Dr. Maina has designed courses in Education Leadership and Management, Science Education, Teachers Standards, Technology infusion in education, Enhancement of Core skills in education, Core Skills Progression, Activity Based Science Instruction, Lead Facilitator Preparation, Value-based Education, Competency-Based Curriculum and recasting face to face session into remote access.
Dr, Maina had done fellowships at Harvard GraduateSchool of Education (2012), METIS Fellowship (2018), and Microsoft Fellow (2016-2020) Dr. Maina has been a visiting faculty for Aga Khan University and Harvard Graduate School of Education. Dr. Maina is currently an Adjunct Faculty at Aga Khan Univesity -Institude of Education (East Africa)
Dr. Maina has coordinated programs including, needs assessment, strategic planning, teacher preparation, leadership and management, a community of learning, mentorship, and coaching, training of trainers, and collaborative discussion forums.
Some of the notable recognitions include Second Most Innovative Teacher on Content in Africa(2010) and a finalist African representative at World Wide Innovative Education Forum (WWIEF).
